Here's an exercise that will help you make the shift. You need to become familiar with the difference in how it feels to occupy your left vs. right brain. Here’s an exercise to help you along:
- Sit down and make yourself comfortable. Take a deep breath. Now, think about the pros and cons for making a certain decision you’ve been contemplating — where to go on vacation? The next car to buy? Whether you can afford the next outfit or technological device? What might you serve at your next party? As you access necessary information that allows you to weigh your options, your thoughts should be feeling pretty down to earth, matter-of-fact...logical. Right?
- Now take another deep breath. Become aware of your body...your limbs...your torso, your face and jaw...feel your hands...
- Now let yourself go to a really good feeling, such as the warmth you felt the last time someone said something loving or supportive to you. The feeling of anticipation you feel when a movie or your favorite TV show is about to start. The comfort you feel when you’ve just settled in to enjoy a meal or phone chat with someone you care about.
Are you starting to feel the difference in how it feels to go from your head — into your heart?
